Rybelsus Tablet is an oral medication used in type 2 diabetes mellitus. The active ingredient in Rybelsus is semaglutide, which is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. GLP1 is a hormone that helps you feel full between eating and helps your body release more insulin to break down your blood sugars. GLP1 agonists mimic the action of GLP1 hormone in the body.

How To Use Rybelsus Tablet
Rybelsus is a tablet that comes as 3mg, 7mg, or 14mg doses to be taken once daily. Patients should be started on 3mg for about a month, and then increased to 7mg. Rybelsus reaches steady-state levels after 4 – 5 weeks of administration, hence why patients should wait about a month to see effects. The dose can be further increased to 14mg if needed, but it is not recommended to take two 7mg tablets to achieve the 14mg dose.
Rybelsus should be taken with a maximum of 4 ounces of plain water at least 30 minutes before consuming any food, beverage, or other oral medication for the day. Rybelsus tablets should be swallowed whole and not split or crushed. Rybelsus should be stored at oom temperature in a dry place and kept in the original blister card until use to protect from moisture.
Patients/caregivers should be aware of potential drug interactions with Rybelsus. As mentioned, Rybelsus can cause hypoglycemia when given with insulin or insulin secretagogues. Insulin secretagogues are medications that help the pancreas release insulin; they include sulfonylureas (glimepiride, glipizide, glyburide) and meglitinides (repaglinide, nateglinide). Rybelsus can also impact the absorption of other oral medications by slowing down emptying of the stomach. Pregnant patients should only use Rybelsus if the potential benefits outweigh the potential risk to the fetus. Breastfeeding is not recommended in patients taking Rybelsus.
How Rybelsus Tablet Works
Rybelsus reduces blood glucose by stimulating insulin secretion and lowering glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. When there is more glucose in the blood, Rybelsus helps stimulate insulin release while suppressing glucagon secretion. Glucagon acts in the opposite way of insulin; it stimulates glucose production and increases blood sugar levels.
